MBA는 미국의 젊은이들에게 ‘성공으로 가는 엘리베이터’로 통한다. MBA(Master of Business Administration)는 한국어로 ‘경영학 석사’로 번역하지만 학문적인 면만 추구하는 일반적인 경영학 석사와는 개념이 다르다. 한마디로 MBA는 경영 이론을 실제 상황에 적응시키도록 하는 실무 훈련 과정이다. 석사 논문이 없는 이유다.
MBA는 100여 년 전 유펜과 다트머스대에서 처음 시작됐다. 따라서 MBA 하면 대개 유펜 등 미국 대학을 정통으로 꼽는다. MBA는 2년제 전문 대학원 과정이며, 졸업 후 초봉 10만~20만달러의 고임금을 받을 수 있어 인기가 높다. 미국에서 경영 컨설팅이나 투자 금융 분야는 경력 10년차 연봉이 무려 50만~100만달러에 이른다. MBA는 현재 미국의 700여 개 대학에 개설돼 있다. 이중 하버드·유펜·스탠포드 등 톱 MBA의 경우 합격률이 10%대에 불과할 정도로 경쟁이 치열하다.
◇미국 MBA 현황
미국에는 700여 개의 대학에 MBA 과정이 있으며, 매년 15만명에 가까운 경영학 석사(MBA)가 쏟아져 나오고 있다. 1980년대 5만명이 채 안되었다는 사실과 비교하면 엄청나게 증가한 숫자다.
학부성적(GPA)도 평균 3.5, MBA 입학시험인 GMAT도 평균 700점을 상회하고 있다. 2011학년도 경쟁이 가장 극심했던 대학으로는 서부의 스탠퍼드가 꼽혔으며, 경쟁률은 7%에 그쳤다.
MBA는 여러 형태가 있는데 유럽식의 1년 과정 MBA와 미국식의 2년 과정이 있다. 또 풀타임 과정과 고위직 관리자를 위한 이그제큐티브(Executive Part-time, 최고경영자 과정) 과정이 있다.
MBA는 실무를 중시하는 대학원이지만 상당히 많은 양의 학습을 요구한다. 특히 첫 해의 학습 부담은 엄청나다. 1년이란 짧은 기간 동안 경제학은 물론, 통계학, 자료 분석 방법, 커뮤니케이션, 리더십, IT 등 다양한 분야의 스킬을 배워야 하므로 심한 스트레스를 받기도 한다. MBA는 대개 2년제 풀타임이지만 1년제도 있다. 유럽에서는 insead와 IMD를 최고로 쳐준다.
◇MBA 진학절차 및 전략
미국 MBA 과정은 일반 학부와 같이 9월에 시작한다. 원서 접수는 연말부터 이듬해 3월까지 3차례 정도 받는다. 반면 유럽 MBA의 경우 1월에 시작하는 학교가 많아 7, 8월중 지원을 해야 한다. MBA는 지원시 대학성적(GPA)과 경영대학원 시험인 GMAT, TOEFL(유학생), 직장 경력, 에세이, 추천서를 제출하고 인터뷰를 거쳐야 한다. 지원 성적은 GMAT과 GPA가 높으면 좋겠지만 실은 이같이 단순한 성적보다는 직장 경력이나 에세이, 추천서가 더 중시된다. 이는 최고 MBA로 꼽히는 유펜 와튼스쿨(U-Penn Wharton School) 합격생들의 GPA가 2.5인 경우도 상당수이며(평균은 3.5), 스탠퍼드도 GMAT 530점 짜리가 (평균은 720점) 간혹 있는 것을 보면 알 수 있다. 결론적으로 직장 경력과 에세이, 추천서, 인터뷰가 합격의 주요 변수가 된다는 얘기다. 미국 톱 MBA 합격자의 직장 경력은 대개 5년 정도이며, 중위권 MBA도 최소 1, 2년 경력을 갖고 있어야 한다. 상위권 MBA 대학들은 지원자의 직장 경력이 4년 정도가 되지 않으면 원서를 제대로 읽지도 않는 것으로 알려졌다. 물론 학부때 회사를 설립해 활동한 경험이 있으면 곧바로 MBA에 진학할 수 있다. 그러나 이런 경우는 극히 드문 케이스다.
지원서 작성시 주요 전략으로는 △다른 학생들과 차별화를 분명히 꾀해야 함은 물론 △왜 MBA를 하고 싶은지 △자신이 지원한 학교와는 잘 맞는지 등이 지원서에 잘 드러나도록 해야 한다는 것이다. 특히 제출 서류 중 자신을 가장 잘 드러낼 수 있는 에세이는 당락의 결정적 요소가 될 수 있다. 성적이 비슷비슷한 지원자들을 평가하는 입학사정관 입장에서는 ‘튀는 에세이’에 더 좋은 점수를 줄 수 밖에 없기 때문이다. 이같이 에세이 준비가 꽤 신경쓰이는 부분이 되면서 MBA 진학을 ‘산 넘어 산’에 비유하기도 한다. 전문가들은 에세이 작성과 관련, 향후 직업에 대한 비전만을 잔뜩 나열하기보다 자신을 진솔하게 드러내는 것이 바람직하다고 강조한다.
◇ GMAT시험
GMAT는 ETS가 주최하는 시험으로 미국, 캐나다, 영국 등 경영대학원 진학 희망자들을 대상으로 한 시험이다. 시험은 인터넷으로 치러지며 여러 차례 응시가 가능하고 점수는 5년간 유효하다. 점수는 200~800점 스케일. 시험은 고도의 언어 능력을 요구하는 Verbal과 기초적 수리능력을 테스트하는 Quantitative 섹션으로 나뉘어져 있다. 웹사이트:www.mba.com
◇통합 MBA 과정(Joint program)
많은 학교가 MBA와 함께 다른 학위를 이수하는 통합 MBA 과정을 제공한다. 예를 들면 MBA/JD, MBA/MSW, MBA/MSE, MBA/MD등 다양하다. 가장 인기 있는 프로그램은 MBA/JD과 의학과 경영학을 하는 MD/MBA로 4년 정도가 소요된다. 두 개의 학위를 단기간에 취득하는 이점이 있지만 학업 부담이 몹시 크다. 통합과정에 입학하고자 한다면 지망하는 두 개의 대학원에서 따로 입학 허가를 받아야 한다. MBA 통합 과정은 사회가 날로 복잡해지면서 MBA 전공자의 몸값을 더 올릴 것이라는 기대감을 낳게 한다. 젊은 나이에 CEO가 되는 경우다. 그러나 아직은 숫자가 미미하고, 시기상조라는 주장도 있다.
◇학비
MBA의 한해 평균 학비는 6만~10만 달러 수준이다. 그러나 기숙사비, 책값, 건강보험료 등을 포함하면 8만~12만 달러 안팎까지 치솟는다. 학부 때보다 학비 보조가 적게 이뤄지지만 성적 우수자 등에게는 펠로십(장학금)등이 주어진다. 또 연방 정부에서 제공하는 낮은 이자율의 학생 융자도 이용할 수 있다.
